Carbon dioxide or CO2 is recognized worldwide as the reason behind rising temperatures. Since the Industrial Revolution, temperatures have been rising as a consequence of factories and manufacturing. Rising temperatures are the reason behind climate change.

Climate change has serious impacts on the Earth’s makeup, and results in major side effects on human health and natural disasters. In April 2019, scientists said there is a record high of 415 parts per million of CO2. In the last 250 years, there has been a total of 1 trillion metric tons of increase in CO2.

Progress at Tuskegee University

Dr Michael L. Curry and student Donald White at Tuskegee University made a new climate change discovery involving bio-based natural materials. The materials have the potential to eliminate the build up of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The researchers have chosen a different approach than increasing forestry and geoengineering. Instead, they have discovered that nanocellulose is capable of capturing, storing and releasing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Curry said, “Nanocellulose is a natural material that can be found in abundance on this planet,” Curry said. “Using this material to develop new technologies for the capture and storage of carbon dioxide will only push the boundaries of science toward the development of new systems that promotes a cleaner and cooler atmosphere.”

Curry added about climate change, “We made this problem, but by developing and employing the appropriate technology to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we can also make a better, healthier planet for centuries to come.”
