7 people, including 2 children, have been killed in a crash between a light aircraft and a helicopter on the Spanish island of Majorca.
The helicopter crash occurred at around 1:30PM local time in Majorca near Inca. 2 of the victims were in the light aircraft. 5 were in the helicopter and included a pilot, a couple and their two children.
The local police reported that the plane landed onto a farm around 30 minutes away from Palma, which is the capital of the island. The collision was less than 1000 feet from the ground. The debris landed in a wide area, including in different homes. Firefighters are attempting to tackle the flames from the crash.
The helicopter belonged to a company called Rotorflug Helicopters and was a Bell 216. The pilot was Italian and picked up the family he was carrying in Son Bonet. The company has not yet commented on the tragic loss.
The pilot of the light aircraft was from Spain and was called Juanjo Vidal. His wife dropped him to the airport in Bennisalem and watched the aircraft go down.
The Spanish PM tweeted, “Following with worry the information that is reaching us from Inca in Majorca. My solidarity and affection for the people who have lost their lives in this tragic accident.”
The Balearic Islands Government representative said, “At 1.35pm today an accident has occurred between a helicopter and a microlight in Inca above the old road to Costitx. Seven people have died in the air accident in Inca between a helicopter carrying three adults and two children and a microlight with two adults on board.”
The nationalities of the victims are unknown.
