The whole story was revealed by a Twitter user named Meera. Her account handle is @m_rab09. She wrote, “Tameer is a 10 yrs old kid. Before yesterday he jumped out of the balcony because of bullying. Yes a 10 yrs old kid committed suicide. His classmates bullied him verbally, made fun of him, and told other kids to not talk to him and made a whatsapp group called ‘We hate Tameer’.”

She added, “My question is why do 10 yrs old kids have phones from the first place? Secondly I wish I can say I’m surprised but I am not, Its scary and sad that kids are having suicidal thoughts. Bullying should be taken very seriously. RIP Tameer.”

Someone asked her, “When did [Tameer’s parents] find out all this information? Before or after such cruelty? If after, did we really care? Let’s be more proactive.”

Meera replied, “From what I’ve read, his parents knew about all of this happening and he’s been bullied the previous school years too and they were telling him how things will eventually get better. I actually blame the parents for not taking an action before it gets to this point.”

According to Meera, the 10 year old child committed suicide in a school in either Jordan or Palestine. Her tweet now has over 220 retweets on social media.

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, “Among younger children, suicide attempts are often impulsive. They may be associated with feelings of sadness, confusion, anger, or problems with attention and hyperactivity.”

The AACAP also says that children who are depressed or have suicidal thoughts will often express them with statements such as ‘I wish I was dead’ or ‘I won’t be a problem for you much longer’.

Other signs to look out for include:

  • “changes in eating or sleeping habits”
  • “frequent or pervasive sadness”
  • “withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities”
  • “frequent complaints about physical symptoms often related to emotions, such as stomachaches, headaches, fatigue, etc.”
  • “decline in the quality of schoolwork”
  • “preoccupation with death and dying”

May Tameer rest in peace.
