US TV presenter Alex Housden told black co-host Jason Hackett that the baby gorilla playing on air “kind of looks like you.”
KOCO-5’s morning news presenter Alex Housden told her colleague Jason Hackett that the baby gorilla being shown on-screen “kind of looks like you”. The story being features was of an ape caretaker who was being featured on the social media accounts of Oklahoma City Zoo.
She apologized for her comments the next day with her co-presenter next to her.
She said, “I said something yesterday that was inconsiderate, it was inappropriate, and I hurt people.” She also said that Hackett was one of her best friends, and that she was sorry if she had hurt anyone else “out there” watching her as well.
Hackett said he believed her apology. However, he told her to be aware that this was a “teachable moment” and that “words matter”.
He said, “We have to understand the stereotypes, we have to understand each other’s background and the words that hurt, the words that cut deep.”
Many people addressed the issue online. One person told the news channel, “You guys over their need to do the right thing and fire Alex Housden. She has truly been exposed for what she is, that racist commentary should have happened she needs to GO!!!’
Another said, “News anchor Alex Housden gets to tell her co-worker Jason Hackett he looks like a gorilla on live news and keep her job? Wow that’s absurd to say the least.”
KOCO News has not yet commented on whether Housden will be fired.
