Earlier on Tuesday, Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s fifth Congressional state District Representative.
Ilhan Omar is a Somali-American Muslim woman. If she wins the general election, she will be America’s first Muslim congresswoman.
The path towards a historic turn has been very challenging for Omar. She defeated four other Democratic candidates in a crowded race to fill the seat that opened up when Rep. Keith Ellison (D) announced his bid to become the state’s attorney general.
In the general elections taking place later in November, Omar will be facing Republican Jennifer Zielinski. However, in the solidly Democratic district, Omar is the indeed the favorite to come out on top.
Muslim representation has been blossoming lately, and many are referring to this as a healthy move towards progressive politics. Last week, Rashida Tlaib won her primary for a House seat in Michigan. If Omar wins the seat as the first as America’s first Muslim congresswoman, she will be sharing her historic feat with Democrat Rashida Tlaib.
In 2016, Omar was elected as the elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016, she became the nation’s first Somali-American legislator.
The 35-year-old Somali-American lawmaker said moments after registering to run, “I know what it feels like to be a young family looking for opportunity in the United States and I am excited to go and be a voice for the voiceless at the Capitol.”
Ilhan Omar has had a challenging and a tough life indeed and she has worked very hard for where she is now. She was 12 when she came to the US for the first time, after spending four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. She is now a mother of three, living in Minnesota since over two decades.
Muslim representation is very important especially in times when Islamophobic rhetoric and policies are being endorsed by the Trump Administration.
