Hamza bin Laden, Osama bin Laden’s son, is dead after a counter terrorism operation in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the counter terrorism operation took place in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region. The death reportedly took place sometime in the last two years sometime in July or August. The United States was involved in the operation.
Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said last month that it was “his understanding” that Hamza was dead. Other senior officials did not confirm the news.
President Trump then confirmed in a White House statement that Hamza “was killed in a United States counter-terrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region. The loss will not only deprives al -Qa’ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group.”
A UN report from last year said that Hamza “continued to emerge as a leadership figure in al-Qaida,” and that he “has been given a more prominent role within Al-Qaida, and is considered to have the capability to follow through with his threats.”
The report also said, “Hamza seeks to grow Al-Qaida’s network and use a new phase of terrorist attacks in major Western cities to raise his profile and announce the return of Al-Qaida with himself as a new leader.”
Sources told New York Times that the death occurred sometime in the last two years, but that information became public in July. The role of the US in the death is not yet confirmed.
The State Department put out a $1 million bounty on Hamza in March. Before he was declared dead, Osama bin Laden’s son was known to be in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region.
