The patriarch of the Jackson family, Joe Jackson, has passed away of pancreatic cancer at the age of 89.
According to family sources, Joe passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, TMZ reported. He had been battling health issues for quite some time. In June, Joe was hospitalized with terminal cancer. Since then, his health progressively got worse. His wife Katherine, children, and grandchildren were with him at the time of his death.
In the days leading up to his death, his family was not allowed to visit him. Jermaine Jackson told Daily Mail, “No one knew what was going on — we shouldn’t have to beg, plead, and argue to see our own father, especially at a time like this. We have been hurting. We were not being told where he was and couldn’t get the full picture. Even from the doctor. My mother was worried sick.”
On June 24, an account claiming to be Joe Jackson tweeted out, “I have seen more sunsets than I have left to see. The sun rises when the time comes and whether you like it or not the sun sets when the time comes.”
His granddaughter, Paris Jackson, cleared the air and explained while she appreciated the sentiment of the tweet, her grandfather had not been behind the tweet, nor did he own the account.
In 2015, Joe suffered from a stroke and 3 heart attacks. He had to get a pacemaker put in before his health stabilized. He was hospitalized again in 2016, when he came down with a very high fever. However, he successfully recovered and was seen out and about soon after.
He became known over the years as an abusive parent and mentor. Publicly owning up to all the allegations, he said his methods had kept his kids out of jail and given them great success, and that was what mattered to him. In an interview with CNN, Joe Jackson said, “I’m glad I was tough, because look what I came out with. I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right.”
He also addressed allegations that his kids were not allowed to call him ‘Dad’ and had to call him by his first name instead. He said, “You had all those kids running hollering around. They’re hollering, ‘Dad, Dad, Dad,’ you know, and it gets to be — it sounds kind of funny to me. But I didn’t care too much about what they called me, just as long as they (were) able to listen to me and what I had to tell them, you know, in order to make their lives successful. This was the main thing.”
During an acceptance speech at the Radio Disney Awards, Janet Jackson recently paid tribute to her father. She did not mention his health, but thanked him for giving her her drive. She said, “My mother nourished me with the most extravagant love imaginable. My father, my incredible father drove me to be the best I can. My siblings set an incredibly high standard, a high bar for artistic excellence.”
His grandson, Randy Jackson, took to Twitter to lament his passing, with over a hundred people sending in their respects in the hour the tweet has been up.
Fans also took to social media to express their thoughts on the passing of the force behind the Jackson family.
he’s with his son now.
