Gay couple, Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black, announced that they are having a baby! Tom, 23, is a British diver while his husband Dustin, 43, is an American filmmaker and director.
The two men in love took to their Instagram accounts to announce that their first baby is on the way. Dustin and Tom uploaded similar pictures at the same time on Valentine’s day to inform their fans that the pair has embarked upon the journey to start a family.
In Tom’s photo, Dustin and he are sitting next to each other with their foreheads gently touching. However, in Dustin’s picture, Tom can be seen snuggling with Dustin while he has his eyes closed.
In both pictures, the two men lovingly hold a picture from each side. The picture is a sonogram of a baby! Tom captioned his picture, “HAPPY VALENTINES DAY”.
While Dustin wrote, “A very happy #ValentinesDay from ours to yours.”
The sonogram implies that the couple has opted for a surrogate instead of adopting a child. However, no details of the surrogate have been revealed.
Tom and Dustin began dating back in 2013. After living together for two years in London, the two decided to get engaged in October 2015.
The pair officially tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony on 6 May 2017 at Bovey Castle.
In an interview with Belfast Telegraph, Tom Daley said, “Lance and I definitely want a family in the future. Who knows when? We’re both lucky to have supportive families and we want to share that with our own children.”
The love affair between the two started at an industry event, where Tom made the move on Dustin by putting his phone number on his now husband’s phone.
In an interview with OUT Magazine, the prolific filmmaker and Academy Award winner said, “First off, let me be honest: When Tom walked in I was, like, Oh my God, he’s so cute. I knew who he was- I’d watched the Olympics- but in person, I found him more mature and confident than I had expected.”
However, since Tom came in with a number of women, Dustin thought he might not be gay.
He continued, “But occasionally, I would look over at my right and I would catch Tom looking at me- that split second when someone is looking at you before they realize they’ve been caught and look away. And I thought that’s not straight.”
He further added, “And then my friend texted me from across the table, and his text said, ‘He’s Google-searching you.’ Well, don’t read into that too much. I do that occasionally at dinner tables. But that, in combination with the look, made me think, something’s up here, but that’s too good to be true. He can’t be into me. I’m dressed in a hoodie.”
In the same interview, Tom also told about the first encounter with his husband from his perspective. He said, “I’m not going to lie: I had no clue who Dustin Lance Black was, or what he did. I just remember thinking, Oh wow, who’s that? He was wearing a white T-shirt with a thin red hoodie, and a leather jacket over it, and I thought he looked like a swimmer because he has quite broad shoulders.”
He continued, “As the dinner progressed, I kept on looking at him, and he kept catching me, which was awkward at times, because I would always look away.”
People on Twitter also responded to the news of the couple getting a baby. While some comments congratulated the two, other people were not onboard with the idea.
One person said, “I can’t wait to see this baby rising with a lot of psychological issues… people like you are destroying our lives and the path of the mother nature.”
Another said, “Tom Daley and his husband should’ve just adopted children if they want kids. Paying some woman loads of cash to do something you that you two can’t do biologically and then calling it ‘your baby’ just doesn’t sound right in my opinion.”
There were others who defended the couple and congratulated them on the coming baby.
One person said, “Good luck to them! I hope they enjoy being parents when it happens for them.”
Another said, “What has the world come to when a couple announce the impending birth of a much wanted and loved child and they get slated for it? I’m glad my son will grow up to love and accept everybody and not have hideous views like this.”
