According to witnesses, the Sheriff’s vehicle fled the scene after it collided with the protestor. A Sacramento Metro Fire Department crew arrived later to pick up the fallen victim, who had sustained multiple injuries.

The vigil held on Saturday night was for Stephon Clark, the unarmed African-American man who was shot by police officers on March 18.

“He never even stopped, it was a hit and run,” Wanda told the Bee reporter.

In a statement released by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s department, Sheriff’s Spokesperson, Sergeant Shaun Hampton, said that the “patrol vehicle was traveling at slow speeds” when the incident took place.

However, the statement failed to address why the Sheriff in question did not stop his vehicle after it hit the protestor. Hampton also added that protestors were “pounding and kicking” the two police cars patrolling the area, due to which their vehicles sustained “scratches, dents and a shattered rear window”.

Cleveland told newspapers that when the first police vehicle entered the area and requested protestors to “back away from the vehicle”, she started to move towards the curb. Due to her arthritis and weak knees, she was moving slowly when she got hit by the second vehicle, which made no such requests.

Cleveland is a prominent social activist in Sacramento and regularly attends City Council meetings. “She does what she can to always make sure she gives back to the community,” her friend Ashley Crabtree told the Sacramento Bee.
