Four-time Emmy award-winning producer J Michael Mendel has passed away at the age of only 52 years old: he was best known for The Simpsons and Rick and Morty.
Michael Mendel joined The Simpson’s in 1989 and produced 207 episodes in the next ten years. He won Emmys for his work in 1995, 1997 and 1998. He won a fourth Emmy in 2018 for his four years of work on Rick and Morty. He worked on a total of 22 episodes of the popular show. During his career, he has also worked on Napoleon Dynamite, Big and Jerry Maguire.
Mendel’s wife, Juel Bestrop, survives him. She told The Hollywood Reporter that he died in his Studio City house on Sunday of natural causes. He has a son named Jacob and a daughter named Jesse.
The Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland wrote on Twitter, “My friend, partner, and line producer Mike Mendel passed away. I am devastated. My heart breaks for his family. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you by my side Mike. I’m destroyed.”
Adult Swim, the network which created Rick and Morty, released a statement about the demise of Michael Mendel. It said, “All of us at Adult Swim are devastated by the untimely passing of Mike Mendel. Mike was the heart of the ‘Rick and Morty’ production family, his fantastic talent and wit will be sorely missed. Mike was a universally respected Emmy-winning producer with over 25 years in the industry, who guided and supported a generation of artists, writers and creators and his absence will be felt by the entire community. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Rick and Morty story artist Dik Poe wrote, “Came into work to the news that our boss, leader, friend, line-producer Mike Mendel passed away He was the most honest, trusting producer I’ve worked for My heart aches for his family, loved ones, & crew. We love you. Thanks for everything.”
Amazon Prime producer Mark Douglas wrote, “Mike Mendel was a mentor to me when I was just starting out working in TV. A really wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed.”
