On Wednesday, 14th of February, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire in Majory Stoneman Douglas High School , leaving 17 people dead.
Cruz then attempted to blend in with the students and evacuate the premises. He was caught and taken into custody without a fight, and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
Cruz, previously expelled from the school, entered the premises wearing a gun mask and carrying an AR-15 rifle, ammunition and smoke grenades. Students and teachers initially thought they were having a fire drill until they heard gunshots. Cruz killed three people outside the school, entered one of the buildings and killed another 12. 2 people later died of their injuries in the hospital.
The situation became more complex when it was revealed that Cruz had commented on a YouTube post last year, promising to eventually become a “professional school shooter”.
Since the incident on Wednesday, a barrage of celebrities has been voicing their thoughts and concerns on social media. Many of them link this incident to the ongoing debate about gun control in the USA.
The FBI admitted that they had been aware of the comment and had carried out investigations but had not been able to fully identify the source. To many people, this is a clear sign that a harsher stance on gun control needs to be in place.
