Previously, rumors were circulating that Harry Styles will be starring as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid live-action remake. However, the singer declined the offer respectfully. Disney has found its new Prince Eric!
Now, Deadline has confirmed the news that Jonah Hauer King will take on the coveted role. King, a British actor, is a newcomer. His previous works include BBC’s Little Women and A Dog’s Way Home.
King will star alongside Halle Bailey in the Disney film. Bailey is set to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Rob Marshall will be directing the remake of the animated movie.
Fans were not happy with Bailey’s casting. People came up with hashtags like #NOTMYAriel #MakeArielWhiteAgain to protest against the black actress playing the popular role.
However, Freeform, a Disney-owned TV network, issued a paragraph on Sunday defending the decision. In an Instagram post by freeform post titled, “An open letter to the Poor, Unfortunate Souls,” It wrote that while Hans Christian Andersen, the original author of the fairy tale, was Danish, “Ariel … is a mermaid.”
The post continued: “So after all this is said and done, and you still cannot get past the idea that choosing the incredible, sensational, highly-talented, gorgeous. Halle Bailey is anything other than the INSPIRED casting that it is because she ‘doesn’t look like the cartoon one’, oh boy, do I have some news for you … about you.”
Alan Menken will compose the music for the remake. While Lin-Manuel Miranda will write the lyrics for the songs. Miranda will also be producing the film. Menken wrote the original film’s songs, Under the Sea, Part of Your World and Kiss the Girl.
Furthermore, the former One Direction singer was rumored to play the role of Prince Eric. However, back in August, a source told E! News, “While [Harry] is a fan of the project he has respectfully declined the offer.”
Javier Bardem will be playing the role of King Triton. While Melissa McCarthy will be Ursula.
