Fans Slam Aladdin Spin-Off After Mena Massoud's Revelation
Aladdin co-star Will Smith lent his support to Mena Massoud saying, "He is a spectacular actor, and he has nothing to worry about."

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news that Billy Magnussen will reprise the role of the fan-favorite character in a new series. Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme will write the script.

However, fans are furious at the news since it arrives a few days after actor Mena Massoud revealed he had not received a single audition after playing Aladdin in the live-action remake.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, the 28-year-old revealed, “I’m kind of tired of staying quiet about it. I want people to know that it’s not always dandelions and roses when you’re doing something like Aladdin.”

“‘He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers.’ It’s none of those things. I haven’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out,” he continued.

Massoud further said, “It’s wild to a lot of people. People have these ideas in their head. It’s like, I’m sitting here being like, OK, Aladdin just hit $1 billion. Can I at least get an audition? Like I’m not expecting you to be like, here’s Batman. But can I just get in the room? Like, can you just give me a chance? So it’s not always what you think.”

Twitter exploded after Disney announced the spin-off series. One person wrote, “I beg your actual pardon? No disrespect to BM, but how the HELL is the trashiest character in #Aladdin getting a spin-off while #MenaMassoud, the star of the $1 BILLION success that was Aladdin not even getting an audition for new stuff? QWHITE interesting.”

While another protested, “The ONE white character from #Aladdin that didn’t get even two minutes of screentime gets his own spinoff but the actor of the TITLE CHARACTER can’t get any work???”

“When you find out they picked the only white character from #Aladdin to have a spin-off and you realize that his part was so insignificant you forgot he was a character at all,” another said.

Disney has not responded to the criticism.
