TLC’s ‘I Am Jazz’ star, Jazz Jennings, just revealed the date of her gender confirmation surgery! The bold actress is all set to go under the knife on June 26, 2018 and she could not be more excited. She uploaded a new YouTube video in which she talked about everything she is looking forward to.
The 17-year-old titled her video, ‘Preparing for Gender Confirmation Surgery’. She wore her signature blue shell necklace and left her hair loose as she spoke to fans about the reality of her surgery. Jazz wore little to no makeup and looked fresh, young and excited about her upcoming procedure. She repeatedly asserted that she is ‘super excited’ for her surgery, and then took viewers through the procedure.
Jazz explained that because she started taking testosterone blockers very early in life, she didn’t undergo the process of puberty. This was done to ensure she would not develop body hair, a deep voice and other male characteristics. However, the blockers also left her genital area underdeveloped; Jazz has a penis which is going to be surgically changed to a vagina. The procedure requires a lot of skin which Jazz does not have because her genitals did not undergo puberty.
She further explained that surgeons will use a newer technique on her, in which they will extract membrane from her stomach and use that to fashion her new vagina. The teenager was super elated about getting a vagina and repeated this several times. “Y’all. I can’t believe it, I’m going to have a vagina!” she said. The only thing she said she will miss is being able to pee standing up. But that’s about it!
Jazz also recalled an incident from her past where she spoke to her therapist about her feelings. The therapist had held up two dolls, one with a penis and the other with a vagina. Then she had asked Jazz which one she preferred. Jazz had pointed to the one with the vagina, even though she had a penis at the time. This is how she knew she would get gender confirmation surgery one day.
While she wanted to take her fans through her surgery process, she also asserted that the video was meant to be educational. “If I put this information for people to see, they won’t need to ask any more questions,” she said, adding that she also wanted her video to be seen by parents of transgender kids. Jazz just wants people to understand the process and also how to be sensitive about it.
Jazz has her own show on TLC, where she talks about all these issues and gives viewers key insights into her life. She will be sharing her post surgery healing journey on the show as well. Asides from TLC, Jazz has also done videos for channels such as Cosmopolitan, where she revealed important facts about the transgender community. One of her most vital tips was that people should be more mindful while using pronouns like ‘he or she’ and should always ask the transgender person which they prefer. She asserted that it gets very annoying when people deliberately choose not to use the correct pronouns.
Her fans have expressed generally positive reactions. There are obviously some haters, but Jazz knows the Internet is flooded with trolls who exist just to bring other people down. What is important is that the excited teenager is all set for her surgery and we wish her the very best!
