On February 4, the Chinese man – who lives in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province of China – was playing games on his phone while trying to defecate for thirty minutes.

Later that night, he noticed a bell-shaped bulge hanging out of his bottom, along with bruises and blood spots. Bewildered by his deformed bottom, he went to consult a doctor.

Doctor Su Dan recommended a CT scan, which showed a six inch long lump protruding out of his anus. The lump had to be removed by surgery.

Albeit fictional it may sound, the medical condition is very real. It is called rectal prolapse. In this case, the pelvic muscles of the patient are weakened. If it goes untreated, the rectum disconnects from the end of the intestine and appears as a bulge sticking out of the bottom.

Although it is common among children and elderly people, Doctor Su Dan of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University reported that this patient’s condition was particularly aggravated due to delay in the treatment.

Doctor Dan added, “The patient had rectal prolapse since he was four years old, the bulge was able to retract, but he did not treat the condition and the situation got worse.”

Due to the patient’s long untreated prolapse, the muscles of his pelvis were weakened. When he kept his rectum under pressure for consecutive thirty minutes, the pelvic muscles could not afford to keep the intestine and the rectum together.

His rectum was still partially attached to his rear, yet it was disconnected from the inside. The CT scan also illustrated blood spots on his intestinal walls, projecting bruises due to broken pelvic muscles between the intestines and the rectum.

Although the patient had a medical condition since childhood, the doctors were quick to point out the reason behind aggravation of this case: regularly spending a long time on the toilet. As the man said, he was playing games on his phone alongside defecating, which took him much longer than normal to finish.

The guy is currently recovering in the hospital after the surgery.
