The movie has broken records for the biggest box office opening weekend.
The movie is set in 1969, where things are evolving in the filming industry. Margot Robbie plays a pregnant Sharon Tate. Leonardo DiCaprio takes the role of Rick Dalton, a struggling actor. In addition, Brad Pitt stars as Rick’s best friend and stunt double, Cliff Booth.
The movie also stars Luke Perry, who passed away on March 4th. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was the last role he took.
The new movie starring talented artists certainly created a buzz among the audience. With fans curious to see Pitt and DiCaprio, known as two legendary actors in Hollywood, act together.
Over the weekend, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sold around $40.4 million in tickets at United States and Canada theaters. The film has earned the 56-year-old filmmaker his best opening weekend ever.
Tarantino’s new film is also reportedly one of his most expensive films to make, with a cost around $90m.
However, Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood landed an honorable spot at number 2 on Box office hits over the weekend due to Lion King, starring Donald Glover and Beyoncé, taking the number 1 spot.
This weekend, Lion King has earned $75.5m in US and $963m worldwide.
Even though the movie didn’t take the first place in Box office hits for the weekend, it still proved to be a record breaking film for Tarantino.
Once Upon A Time, which is Tarintino’s ninth film, smashed records made by his movie 2009 movie titled Inglorious Bastards. The film starred Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth and Pitt and earned $38m a decade ago.
Inglorious Basterds ultimately made around $321m worldwide.
The 56-year-old’s most successful film overall has been Django Unchained which released in 2012. It earned $30m over the weekend and ultimately made $425m worldwide.
The movie starred DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Tarantino himself and Jamie Foxx. It earned several awards after its release.
Tarantino won an Oscar for ‘Best Writing’ and ‘Original Screenplay’ while Christoph Waltz won an award for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role’ after the movie’s success.
Currently, the film holds 85 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with an audience score of 73 percent.
In addition, New York Time‘s review by A.O. Scott states the movie to be “Tarantino’s most relaxed movie by far, both because of its ambling, shaggy-dog structure and the easygoing rhythm of its scenes.”
