Modern Family is transitioning from pure humor to slightly more serious topics, and will be introducing the death of a significant character this season.
Modern Family premiered in 2009 and has been on the air for 9 seasons. The cast signed on for a tenth one, but there is no news as to whether the show will continue beyond that.
The show has a large main cast of Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Jeremy Maguire. Comprising of three families in total, the cast weaves a funny and wholesome story of generational differences and how they are overcome by the bond of family.
While speaking to EW, Christopher Lloyd said, “We’re handling some bigger life events in this season. We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”
Lloyd added that the death is of a “significant character on the series” and that it will be a “moving event”. The effects of the death will be felt throughout further episodes. The two most obvious candidates for a character that can be written off is Ed O’Neil’s character Jay Pritchett.
Fans had a variety of reactions to the news, which they immediately shared on social media.
They’re killing off a main character on Modern Family?! Please don’t let it be Phil or Cameron. ?

I’m gonna guess the #ModernFamily death will be DeDe because everyone would be impacted from it. Jay’s ex-wife, Claire and Mitchell’s mom, and the kids’ grandma.
