Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ has gone into depth about the repercussions of giving superheroes so much fame, and it might just be the best thing on TV right now.
The Boys is a 2019 TV series currently airing on Amazon, and is all about American superheroes. It follows a group who fight back against people with superheroes who grossly abuse their powers. The show is based on a comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
The show aired on July 26, and has already been renewed for a second season. It has a total of 8 episodes. It stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Kapon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell and Elisabeth Shue.
In the show, people with superpowers are owned by Vought International. The corporation monetizes them, and the superheroes are actually arrogant people outside their public persona. The premier team is known as The Seven, led by Homelander, and the vigilantes are known as Boys, led by Billy Butcher. The latter group attempts to keep for the former under control.
Despite having been on air for only one season, The Boys has quickly become a fan favorite show. It has a 82 percent Tomatometer reading and a 94 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
One critic review reads, “The Boys is an expert deconstruction of superhero stories, with an appropriately wintery view of institutional power, be it corporate, governmental, religious, or caped.”
Another review reads, “The best part of The Boys is that all of its gory, uninching action-packed drama is packaged as a dark comedy. For as disturbing as the plot can get, there are always laughs – often twisted and sardonic – around the corner.”
Audience reviews for the show are also great. One review states, “Just sensational. Very VERY dark and violent, but it’s such a fantastic take on the deconstruction of superheroes.”
Another says, “The icky underbelly of super heroes. Every episode is shocking, especially the finale. Love it but it’s definitely not for the squimish or sensitive. Gird your loins.”
Yet another reads, “Not a typical super hero show … it is dark and entertaining. The characters could just as easily be politicians and entertainment celebrities.”
The Boys will be back for Season 2 on Amazon.
