Folks, Christmas has come early this year! Netflix is teaming up with Ryan Reynolds and the writers of the Deadpool franchise to make an original action film named Six Underground. What’s more, Michael Bay will be directing the project and it is due for release in 2019.
Netflix recently made the announcement on Twitter.

The plot of the film revolves around ‘six billionaires who fake their own death and form an elite team to take down bad guys’, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
It will begin filming this summer and will probably be released in 2019. Reynolds will star in the film and the writers of Deadpool 1 and 2, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, have written the script. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger from Skydance will be producing the film along with director Bay. Skydance already produces two other shows on Netflix, Grace and Frankie and Altered Carbon. The former has received multiple Emmy award nominations.
Fans are excited about the news but many are questioning the choice of director. While the action film will benefit from the chops of the talented Michael Bay – who has become known for directing larger-than-life action movies like The Transformers, Bad Boys and The Rock – he has also become infamous for the use of special effects and explosions. That is something people are not too eager to see.

Prior to this film, Netflix ventured into big-budget productions with their debut project, Bright. The movie, which starred Will Smith, was an urban fantasy crime film and was directed by David Ayer. Although the movie did not do well with critics, being criticized for excessive social commentary, audiences seemed to enjoy it. According to Netflix, the film was viewed more times in its first week than any of their other releases. Bloomberg reported that a sequel for the movie is in the works and will star Will Smith once again.
Meanwhile, Deadpool‘s creative team is having a good month, with their second film breaking records at the box office. The film has domestically earned $125 million on its opening weekend, beating the immensely popular Avengers: Infinity War. It now ranks second, behind its prequel, on the list of largest opening weekend for R-rated films.
We’ll have to wait and see how the film is received, but if the writing follows in the footsteps of the Deadpool franchise, it will surely be a hit!
