The Prodigy’s Keith Flint has died of suicide at 49-years-old. The lead vocalist of the band was found dead in his home in Essex on Monday.
Flint was one of the UK’s most iconic musicians in the 90s. He joined The Prodigy as a dancer and later became a frontman. All of the group’s albums, save from their debut, reached Number 1 in the UK.
The band confirmed the news with the statement, “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator, and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”
Band member Liam Howlett who created The Prodigy in 1990 wrote, “The news is true, I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend. I’m shell shocked, fuckin angry, confused and heart broken ….. r.i.p brother Liam”.
An Essex police spokesperson said, “We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man at an address in Brook Hill, North End, just after 8.10am on Monday. We attended and, sadly, a 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
While talking to The Guardian in 2015, Flint said, “We were dangerous and exciting! But now no one’s there who wants to be dangerous. And that’s why people are getting force-fed commercial, generic records that are just safe, safe, safe.”
Richard Russell of the label XL Recordings paid tribute to Flint, saying, “Devastated keith flint is gone. not just a great performer. he had total integrity & an incredible sense of humor. one of the sweetest people I’ve ever worked with. what a beautiful energy. what a gentleman. privileged to have known him. miss u keith.”
Flint married Japanese DJ Mayumi Kai in 2006 but later separated.
