Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ declared the most played song of the century. The song was originally released in 2006.
The Irish band’s song was named the most played in the United Kingdom in the 21st Century. Snow Patrol released ‘Chasing Cars’ in 2006. It was the 14th best selling single at the time. It was part of their album, Eyes Open.
PPL, a music licensing company, declared Chasing Cars as most played. In second place was I’ve Got a Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas. Pharell Williams’ Happy came third.
The lead singer for Snow Patrol, Gary Lightbody talked about the “love song” with BBC. “I’m not sure how that happened,” he said. “It’s an emotionally open song and it’s a simple song. But it’s also unabashedly a love song, and we don’t really have any others.”
He revealed further, “The way it unifies an audience is the thing I most cherish about it. It’s a beautiful moment every time you play it.”
The song gained a lot of popularity after it was played on many episodes of the hit medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Lightbody talked to The Telegraph saying, “I didn’t know the Grey’s Anatomy but it’s been very good to us so we are fond of it.”
“They asked us whether they could use the track six weeks before it was on in America, so we had forgotten.” he continued further. “It would have been during the UK bedtime so we went to bed one night and woke up the next morning and Chasing Cars was number one on US iTunes overnight.”
The band also thanked PPL for the award on Instagram. They had to cancel their show at Glastonbury in June. One of their band members had to go through an emergency neck surgery.
