Tom Cruise will return as Pete Mitchell, call sign ‘Maverick‘, in the sequel to the 1986 film ‘Top Gun’, as he shares teaser picture of the first day of production for the new film.
The 55-year-old star posted a picture on his Instagram featuring the famous line “Feel the need” which is a reference to the unforgettable line, “I feel the need, the need for speed”.
Tom Cruise added the hashtag #Day1 in the caption, which signified the first day of production for the 1986 hit film’s sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. In the picture, Cruise can be seen wearing his aviation gear, aviators and holding his helmet, while looking on to his F-18 Tomcat.
David Ellison, the film’s producer and the CEO of Skydance Media, told Collider that the sequel will be based on modern warfare and will include the present-day drone technology. He said, “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce, so it’s really [about] exploring the ‘end of an era’ of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
David also added, “The plot will take place in the present day to account for the decades between the sequel and 1986.”
Reportedly, Cruise will play the role of a flight instructor and that the film would revolve around the fifth-generation fighters and will show the end of the era of dog-fighting.
Jerry Bruckheimer, another one of the producers, talked to Metro and praised the actor’s outstanding performance. He said, “When you have an iconic movie like Top Gun you know the bar is really high. But we try to raise the bar in everything we do so it’s all about getting enormously talented people to work on it, and Tom is such a gifted not only the actor but also he produced this thing and he’s got a real sense of what the audience wants and what he likes.”
Although, it has not been clearly stated who will return in the cast for the sequel, Val Kilmer, who played the character of ‘Iceman’ certainly seems to be up for it.
Last year, Kilmer took on Instagram wearing his Top Gun T-shirt and added a caption which read, “it’s official – #TOPGUN2 was announced today. I’m ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!”
On the other hand, Meg Ryan, who played the role of Carole, will probably not be coming back as she recently had stopped making movies to concentrate on her own personal life. Additionally, Kelly McGillis might not be a part of the sequel either, as she has begun concentrating on working only in small indie films.
The film Top Gun: Maverick is all set to be released on July 12, 2019, and is being directed by Oblivion director, Joseph Kosinski.
