Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, has spoken out in support of Taylor Swift after Scooter Braun’s wife called out Swift for her post.
Scooter Braun bought Big Machine Records from Scott Borchetta in a $300 million deal. After the announcement was made, Swift took to Tumblr to write a post about it.
She said, “For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead, I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.”
She added, “This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.”
Scooter’s wife Yael then took to her Instagram to write, “Let’s start with [Swift], whoa. Then let’s get the facts straight. You were given the opportunity to own your own masters, you passed. Interesting that the man you’re so ‘grossed out’ by believed in you more than you believe in yourself. Your dad is a shareholder and was notified and [Big Machine founder Scott Borchetta] personally told you before this came out. So no, you didn’t find out with the world.”
She continued, “And girl, who are you to talk about bullying? The world has watched you collect and drop friends like wilted flowers. My husband is anything but a bully, he’s spent his life standing up for people and causes he believes in.”
Yael concluded with a harsh message asking Taylor to “love herself” as much as Scooter loved her.
Selena Gomez and Taylor Gomez have been friends for a long time. After Braun’s wife responded to Swift, Gomez’s mother came to Swift’s rescue.
In an Instagram post, Selena Gomez’s mother responded to Swift’s post and Yael’s response. She wrote, “[Taylor Swift] I wish I could give you a big hug right now! Thank you for speaking out about this and teaching future young artist about protecting themselves. I don’t understand the pleasure of power plays to simply hurt people! To deny you the option to own your blood, sweat, and tears, especially as a young women who shared growing up in front of the world, is heartbreaking!!”
Addressing Yael directly, she wrote, “[Yael] I would love to have a mom to mom meeting in private, drink some tea and have some real talk!!”
Yael has not yet responded to Selena Gomez’s mother’s article.
