Lanita Carter, one of R Kelly’s victims has come forward to speak out about her experiences with him despite many people being against it.
After R Kelly defended himself in an explosive interview with Gayle King, Lanita Carter has chosen to speak out to CBS News about her experience with R Kelly. She said, “I’m not ashamed of my past anymore. I’m not ashamed of what naysayers say.”
Carter was the rapper’s hairdresser for a while. She said that he forced her into oral s*x in 2003 and spat in her face when she resisted. In Kelly’s earlier interview, he had said, “I have been assassinated. I have been buried alive. But I’m alive. I’m trying to have a relationship with my kids! And I can’t do it! Y’all just don’t want to believe the truth! You don’t want to believe it!”
She also said, “I felt like it should be a crime… That he be able to get on television and lie. It’s actually the reason I’m here”. She added, “I would tell people, ‘Pray for him. He is nothing like they say’. I’ve been carrying this since 2003. I have had to sit on a public bus and watch public conversation: ‘Did you hear about what they did with R. Kelly? They need to leave that man alone’. And I can’t stand up for myself.”
Carter has breached 2 settlements by speaking out. She initially signed a $650,000 settlement with Kelly in which he said that he did not do any wrongdoing. In another settlement six years later, he described having sex with a hairdresser in the song Hair Braider.
Kelly’s lawyers responded to Carter’s claims, saying, “These allegations were fully investigated by the police and prosecutors and a decision was made after evaluating all of the evidence not to bring any charges.”
Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
