Priyanka Chopra gets heavily criticized for supporting armed forces in the aggression between India and Pakistan despite being an ambassador for UNICEF.
Neighboring countries India and Pakistan are currently in an aggressive standoff against each other after the Pulwama attack on February 14. A suicide bomber attacked a bus carrying Indian military forces in the disputed area of Kashmir and caused many casualties. Since then, the situation between the two countries, who have been historically hostile towards one another since 1947 and have gone to war in 1965, has only escalated.
Civilians and politicians on both sides of the border are advocating for peace without resorting to aggression since both India and Pakistan are among the world’s eight nuclear countries. However, Indian actress Priyanka Chopra tweeted out a message yesterday in support of the Indian military, which at the time was involved in skirmishes resulting from breaching the line of control between India and Pakistan. She tweeted out “Jai Hind” which means “Victory to India”.
Since her tweet, many fans and followers have taken to respond to her reminding her that she is a UN ambassador for UNICEF and should be advocating for peace instead of war, especially considering the disastrous impacts of war on children.
One follower wrote, “Are or were you really Unicef goodwill ambassador? I really don’t know how an artist can praise military actions and especially while being an ambassador of the UN. I don’t think this world could ever see peace when peacemakers love wars.”
Another said, “Can the @UN please take back their ambassadorship from Priyanka Chopra? Celebs who fuel wars have no reason to be talking about human rights at any forum. Someone who ‘apparently’ works for children’s rights, needs to be schooled about the impact of war on children?”
