Nicki Minaj cancels her performance at Saudi Arabia music festival in Jeddah after facing intense criticism. Minaj is showing support to women and LGBTQ community with the cancellation.
The Scheduled Concert
The 36-year-old rapper was scheduled to perform a concert on July 18, organised by the Jeddah Season cultural festival. However, Minaj received a ton of backlash after the announcement of her performance. People weren’t on board with the idea of Minaj’s iconic extravagant performances being set in an extremely conservative country.

Fans started questioning the Anaconda singer’s decision to take part in the festival, triggering a storm of rage and criticism on social media. Women started calling the festival’s rules hypocrite as it states women are required to wear an ‘abaya’, which is a modest full length robe used to cover themselves.
Edited photos of the rapper being dressed in the traditional Saudi dress started emerging along with people expressing how they felt about her concert taking place in Jeddah.
One furious female from Saudi wrote “She’s going to go and shake her ass and all her songs are indecent and about sex and shaking ass and then you tell me to wear the abaya, What the hell?”
Additionally, more reactions from Saudi citizens showed their disappointed.

“Decided to no longer move forward”
The Trinidad rapper soon decided to pull out of the festival. She told the Associated Press news, “After careful reflection I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest.”
In addition, Minaj stated, “While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.”
Moreover, The Human Rights Foundation had released a statement previously asking performers to back out of the festival. The organization applauded the Bang Bang singer’s decision to cancel her concert.

The rapper’s fans also supported her decision, acknowledging her “stand on political issues” and calling it “good news”. Here are some reactions from her fans after the news broke out of her cancelling the performance.
Her Saudi fans were upset to hear the news as they were looking forward to attending the 38-year-old’s concert. Minaj shared a post on Instagram for those who were disappointed. The post read, “Saudi Arabia, i see some of your comments & I want to respond directly to my fans. Voice your opinions here.”
