Lil Nas X reveals why he decided to come out at the end of pride month. The singer believes he was “pushed by the universe…”
The 20-year-old singer’s hit song Old Town Road has been receiving a lot of love since its release early this year. The song is officially the longest running at No. 1 and has also remained in the Billboard Hot 100 for over 4 months.
Lil Nas, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, has also made several headlines for coming out as gay at the end of Pride month. He recently revealed why he decided to come out in an interview with TIME magazine.
He tweeted, “Thought I made it obvious,” referring to the rainbow embedded in his album cover. The rapper has since received a lot of backlash but remains positive throughout the hate.
Hill [Lil Nas X], opened up about his decision during the interview. He revealed that he didn’t initially plan on coming out as it was frowned upon during his childhood. He’d been told that homosexuality “is never going to be okay.”
Lil Nas also shared that he feared he would lose his fans after revealing his sexual orientation. He said, “I know the people who listen to this the most, and they’re not accepting of homosexuality.”
Hill did receive a ton on homophobic comments online. However, he chose to take the hate lightly and joked about the backlash.
“Learning the internet over the past couple of years, I used to be that person being negative. So, it’s like, I’m not angry or anything because I understand how they just want that reaction,” he stated during his appearance on BBC Breakfast.
He further added, “But I’m just going to joke back with them.”
The country singer further added that during pride month he changed his plans to keep his sexuality hidden. “I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe,” Lil Nas stated.
Additionally, he explained that the overwhelming support for the LGBTQ community led him to rethink his decision. “In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands–little stuff like that.”
The 20-year-old tweeted at the end of July about how his life had changed. “Last year i was sleeping on my sisters floor, had no money, struggling to get plays on my music, suffering from daily headaches, now i’m gay,” he wrote.
Lil Nas X has released several remixes of his hit song, “Old Town Road”, including a music video inspired by Area 51.
