Tom Cruise played a chivalrous white knight back in 1983 when he rescued co-actor Lea Thompson from having to do a topless scene in their movie, All The Right Moves.
Lea had been called in for the role and had not been told she would have to expose her breasts for the part. Enter Tom, who boldly told the producers they could forget about the nudity.
“Well, if she has to be naked, I’ll be naked too,” he told them, which was a pretty brave move on his part. Lea was eternally grateful for this intervention as she felt she was being forced to expose herself. She recently shared this tidbit with Closer Weekly, talking about how ‘generous’ Tom had been at the time.
She also revealed that she had initially shied away from auditioning because she didn’t want to take her shirt off, but then she got the part anyway and agreed to do it. Tom was truly her hero because not only did he talk on her behalf, he also pulled his weight as a veteran actor and made sure they listened. Lea said she has ‘always been grateful to him for standing to the producers’.
What makes this story even more interesting is that Tom was out there being chivalrous back in the day, way before the Times Up movement came into being. The Hollywood industry has long been a place where actors have complained of being sexually harassed or made uncomfortable. That is why the #MeToo movement also helped shed light on the harassment that does go on behind the screen.
The New York Times stood on the metaphorical soap box and began the Time’s Up movement, which was an open letter. It called together women from everywhere and asked them to stand for those who did not have voices. The letter was signed and vetted by around 400 women, which included Hollywood heavyweights such as Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, Mila Kunis and others.
Time really is up for people who believe they can harass others and get away with it. These last few months have shown a positive trend for people who have come up and revealed the times they felt uncomfortable or were harassed. The most popular allegation was brought up against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The big shot was accused of having harassed close to 80 women at various times.
Harvey adamantly denied everything. Women accused him of inappropriate behavior and sexual molestation in exchange for a guaranteed part in some film. Once his case came to light, more women started reporting their experiences with other Hollywood oldies. Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman came under fire as well as filmmaker Woody Allen. Women made it clear they wouldn’t take harassment lying down anymore.
These cases only serve to remind fans of Tom’s epic action 35 years ago, as he decided he would not sit back and watch a woman being harassed. Lea also spoke up actor Michael J Fox, whom she said was ‘so strong’ and funny. He is another example of how men should really act in the industry. Both men were incredibly sweet to Lea and she has not forgotten it since!
