Kim Kardashian will be paying 5 years of rent for former inmate Matthew Charles who was denied housing after he left prison.
Kardashian, who has been a loud advocate of criminal reform in the past few years, has agreed to pay five years of rent for Charles. He was denied housing after he was granted clemency on January 3 under the First Step Act. Charles was originally put in prison in 1996 for drug trafficking charges.
In 2016, he was released for a brief period under the Fair Sentencing Act which “eliminates the five-year mandatory minimum prison term for first-time possession of crack cocaine”. The law also increases the amount “required for the imposition of mandatory minimum prison terms for trafficking”. However, in 2018, he returned to jail after an appeals judge overturned the case against him.
Charles stayed with a friend and got a job after leaving prison. However, his application for his own apartment was denied on March 7. Kardashian stepped in and helped him out.
Charles posted about Kardashian’s generosity on Facebook, writing, “Kim did not do this for attention or publicity, but I had to share it, because it’s to good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me. THANK YOU KIM KARDASHIAN-WEST and TRACY FOR THE LOVE SHOWN TO ME WHEN I WAS LOCKED UP. AND NOW THAT I’M FREE.. MY HEART IS ENLARGED.”
Kardashian has been a loud advocate of criminal justice reform in the past and visited Sacramento on January 28 to lobby for change in the State Capitol. Kevin McCarty wrote about her visit saying, “Ms. Kardashian West’s visit to the state Capitol was to advocate for criminal justice reforms and issues related to women who are incarcerated.”
Season 16 of Kardashian’s show Keeping Up With the Kardashians returns towards the end of March.
