In a partly unsealed deposition from Kesha and Dr. Luke’s legal battles, Katy Perry denied that the producer ever assaulted her.
Dr Luke filed a claim against Kesha after the singer alleged that he had sexually assaulted her and sued him for sexual assault and battery in 2014. Part of the evidence was a text the singer sent to Lady Gaga, in which she referred to an incident that took place between Dr Luke and Perry.
At the time, Dr Luke’s attorneys also revealed that the CEO of Interscope Records, John Janick, told Kesha who then told Gaga that Perry was assaulted ‘by the same man’ as her.
Perry’s deposition was obtained by E! News. In it, Perry said she never had any romantic or sexual relationship with Lucasz Gottwald, commonly known as Dr Luke. She was then asked, “Did Dr. Luke ever rape you?” She replied in the negative.
She was also asked, “Did Dr. Luke ever sexually assault you?” which she also denied. Perry also denied telling Janick any information about any sexual assault and said that ‘it’s not true’.
After Perry’s statements, a representative for Janick revealed to Vanity, “As his deposition makes clear, John Janick was simply a bystander to a conversation; not a participant in it. Although John is not a party to this litigation, he voluntarily provided factual responses to questions from both sides’ attorneys.”
Both Dr Luke and Kesha’s counsels have spoken out about the evidence from Perry. Dr. Luke’s attorneys told E!, “When Dr. Luke did not agree to her contract terms, Kesha maliciously plotted to destroy Dr. Luke’s business and reputation to pressure him to give in.”
Kesha’s counsel responded with, “Dr. Luke’s litigation strategy has been straight out of the blame-the-victim playbook, intended to humiliate and intimidate Kesha into issuing a retraction of her statements.” They added, “Kesha has never claimed to have any independent knowledge of any alleged assault of Katy Perry (which Ms. Perry has denied in a later deposition).”
Perry fought to have her deposition sealed last week but did not succeed.
