12-year-old Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, is on a weight loss journey inspired by mom, Mama June, who went from size ’24’ to ‘4’ and scored her own T.V. show.
In January 2018, during an interview with Inside Edition, Mama June and Honey Boo Boo revealed that the young reality TV star wants to lose weight like her mom. She spoke about how she had been on a “no-grease diet” for two months.
Mama June told Entertainment Tonight that her pre-teen has been on a strict diet plan which limits intake of fried food and soda and had already lost five pounds so far. “You can put on the weight very easily but it’s not that easy to come off. I promise you”, Mama June said, speaking from experience.
Last year, Shannon scored her own reality show titled, “Mama June: From Not to Hot”. The premise of the show was showcasing her weight loss journey and healthier lifestyle to attain a new body and life. Honey Boo Boo and Pumpkin also starred in the show, which currently runs on We TV.
Though the course of the show, Mama June underwent gastric bypass procedure and other surgeries and adopted an overall healthier lifestyle which resulted in a drop from size ’24’ to size ‘4’, a loss of 150 pounds on the scale.
T.V. audiences first saw Honey Boo Boo in 2012 when she appeared on Toddlers and Tiaras: Season 5 on TLC. She was just six years old at the time.
The show, which was about child pageant queens and their parents, led to fame and stardom for Boo Boo. She landed her own spin-off series on TLC, titled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Honey Boo Boo’s sassy and straight forward nature is what made people fall in love with her.
The show starred her mom; June Shannon aka “Mama June“, her dad (June’s ex); Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, and her sisters; Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon, Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon and Anna “Chicadee” Shannon.
The show ended its three-season run in 2014 amidst controversy when it came to light that Mama June was dating a man accused of child molestation, Mark Anthony McDaniel Sr.. An entire season of episodes were left unaired, following the cancellation of the show.
Following the show’s cancellation, Alana is quoted to have said on Oprah’s Where Are They Now, “We stopped filming the show, I was kinda happy about that and at the same time, I was sad,” Alana said. “So I was…sa-happy?”
Audiences couldn’t soon forget the curvaceous starlet, but Honey Boo Boo and her family were unable to sign on any other shows, contracts or appearances until their contract with TLC expired in late May 2015.
The chubby child then appeared as a special guest on the show “The Doctors” in 2015, where she underwent a health intervention. The 4 ft. 6″ tall 9-year-old, weighed 125 pounds at the time and was labelled “obese” by The Doctors according to her BMI. Shanon initially defended her daughter’s weight as being due to steroid medication. By the end of the intervention, Honey Boo Boo and her mom seemed excited about getting healthier.
In March 2017, Alana appeared on an episode of her mother’s reality TV show and openly spoke about embracing her curves. She resisted suggestions by Mama June’s doctor of changing her eating patterns or routine. “Mama’s on this diet, but I’m not, boo boo. I like my curves. … I mean, seriously, this dude is really crazy.”
“I’m not jumping on any bandwagon, unless it has cheeseburgers and stuff,” she said confidently when the doctor advised the family to stay away from fried and fattening foods.
Shannon has expressed hope that her daughter will continue to live a happy healthy lifestyle and wont have to go through what she did herself.
