Walter Frederick George Williams, better known as Bill Maynard, has died after falling off a mobility scooter, on March 30, 2018.
Jacqueline Reddin, Bill Maynard’s daughter in law, said that the 89-year-old actor passed away after he had broken his hip after falling from his mobility scooter.
Jacqueline called his father in law “larger than life” and said, “He just loved showbiz. He was so proud of the fact that he had been working for 81 years.”
Bill Maynard was known for his role as Claude Jeremiah Greengrass in the famous TV Series ‘Heartbeat’, from 1992 to 2000. He started acting under the surname ‘Maynard’, which he had inspired from a famous confectionery in Britain, called Maynard’s.
Bill Maynard was also a popular character in the ‘Carry On’ films – ‘Carry On At Your Convenience’, ‘Carry On Henry’ and ‘Carry On Dick’ – from 1970 to 1974.
He also starred in the TV show ‘In Sickness and in Health’ as Bert Luscombe between 1985 and 1992. He was also part of a 2003 ‘Heartbeat’ spin-off, ‘The Royal’, as Claude Jeremiah Greengrass.
His latest film, ‘The Moorside’, came out in 2016, in which appeared for a brief period of time and played the role of Cecil.
Bill Maynard also got his autobiography published in November 1975, titled ‘The Yo-Yo Man’, and then again in 1997, by the name of ‘Stand Up…And Be Counted’.
Apart from his acting career spanning eight decades, Bill also had a career in singing. He won the second position at the Eurovision Song Contest of 1957 in Britain.
He also tried his luck in politics, when he stood independently in the by-election of Chesterfield in 1984 against Tony Benn.
Additionally, he was a radio presenter on the BBC Radio Leicester in 1968, and then later in March 2003, on his 60th anniversary of appearing on television.
He said, at that time, “I am delighted to be still in the entertainment industry doing what I love most – 76 years since I began my career. I have had an amazing career and I consider myself to be very lucky to still have the energy and enthusiasm to take on new work.”
The multimillionaire married Muriel Linnett in November 1949, but unfortunately, she died in 1983. Later in 1989, he married Tonia Bern.
