The cup was accidentally left in the last episode, and HBO confirmed that the situation was totally a mistake and not product placement. HBO said, “the latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.” Even Starbucks addressed the issue, saying, “TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.”

HBO has now quietly removed the coffee cup and the current shot on HBO Go does not include the coffee cup in front of Daenerys. They did not replace it with a cup of tea, they just removed the drink altogether. Interestingly, The Wall Street Journal revealed that the cup was not from Starbucks at all, but from the craft services on set.

Game of Thrones executive producer said Bernie Caulfield that slip-ups like this are rare but do happen, adding that “if that’s the worst thing they’re finding, then we’re in good shape.”
