Grumpy Cat has passed away at the age of 7 years old after a urinary tract infection. The cat took over the internet with her expressions and even had her own Lifetime TV special.
Her family posted a picture and statement on the official Twitter account, writing, “We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat. Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.”
The statement added, “She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha. Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
Grumpy Cat gained fame online after a picture of her was posted on Reddit by the Bryan Bundesen, the brother of her owner Tabatha Bundesen. Her face was grumpy because of an underbite and a feline dwarfism, and she also had different hind legs and an undersized body. The cat immediately became an internet celebrity, with memes being made around her and invitations for endorsements.
Her owner Tabatha eventually left her job at the Red Lobster in 2013 to manage the cat’s schedule and her brother Bryan managed her website and social media accounts. The cat had around 8.3 million followers on Facebook, 2.4 million on Instagram and 1.5 million on Twitter. The announcement of her passing has received over 1500 comments and 9800 retweets in the first two hours of posting.
Grumpy Cat celebrated her 7th birthday on April 4.
