Author George R R Martin, whose books inspired the well-renowned television series ‘Game of Thrones’, recently sat down for an interview with The Observer.

The book series titled ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’  has five published books and has two more in the works. However, the television series itself has ended.

Martin told the outlet that he was feeling a lot of pressure while the show was airing. He said, “There were a couple of years where, if I could have finished the book, I could have stayed ahead of the show for another couple of years, and the stress was enormous.”

“I don’t think it was very good for me, because the very thing that should have speeded me up actually slowed me down,” he continued, saying “Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day – and a good day for me is three or four pages – I’d feel terrible because I’d be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I’ve only written four pages when I should have written 40.'”

Martin described the series ending as “freeing, because I’m at my own pace now. I have good days and I have bad days and the stress is far less, although it’s still there… I’m sure that when I finish A Dream of Spring you’ll have to tether me to the Earth.”

Comparing the television with his written works he said, “They’re not the same thing, although they are very closely related to each other.” George RR Marin also said that shows ending will not change the way he writes or what he has already written.

The 70-year-old novelist also talked about his book fans who kept all major spoilers to themselves while the show aired. “The way in which no one spoiled the Red Wedding is one of the biggest stories in the history of television because there were literally millions of book readers who knew what was coming and they gave nothing away.”

He laughed and continued further, “Instead, they did something which I didn’t expect either – they recorded the shock and dismay of their loved ones.”

The latest GOT book came out in 2011. Fans have been waiting for the upcoming novel ‘The Winds of Winter’ for a long time.

However, Martin wrote in his blog, “Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is.   THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done.  I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.”

‘The Winds of Winter’ still does not have an official release date.
