Demi Lovato has deleted her Twitter account after intense backlash over the jokes she cracked about rapper 21 Savage’s recent deportation.
The rapper was recently arrested in Atlanta on Sunday by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They said that he was actually from the UK and had come to the US on a visa as a child and never returned.
On Sunday, Lovato tweeted, “So far 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” She also posted a meme regarding 21 Savage writing with a feather pen, and many people took to her tweets to criticize her for insensitivity.
Lovato posted a few of these tweets on her own Instagram story, saying people had taken the responses too far. Clarifying her own position, she said she “wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported.”
She said she was just laughing at how no one had known about 21 Savage’s true background. She added, “The meme I posted/was talking about was of him writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let alone their OD.”
Lovato also got into it with Rapper Wale, who asked, “Why is somebody freedom funny…I don’t get the joke.” She replied in a tweet that has since been deleted, saying, “Wale just salty I never replied to his desperate tweets years ago.”
He responded, “Still ain’t gon disrespect you…still praying for you Demi. Glad u seen my old tweets. Hopefully you seen the ones providing comfort and prayer when you were down. I don’t kick people when they down. Go queen.”
He also added, “A lot of people were sending you love light, prayers etc. When people were making jokes about u at a rough time. A lot of people. Bless up.”
Lovato has not revealed when she plans on returning to Twitter.
