Andy Spade, Kate Spade’s widower, was spotted on Thursday morning, leaving his Park Avenue apartment with his face covered with a cartoon mouse mask.
Andy was seen leaving the apartment and moving towards his car with not only the bizarre Bernard mouse mask, which was voiced by Bob Newhart in the 1977 The Rescuers movie, but also a yellow backpack and a notebook.
As the fashion designer’s widower was making his way towards his black SUV, reporters and photographers ran after him, questioning his strange behavior. Andy appealed for some respect and asked, “Do you know the meaning of respect?”
However, he did not answer any questions or give any explanations as to why he was wearing the mask.
Following the puzzling incident, Andy was seen with his mother, Judith Spade, on the same day. The grieving husband was preparing for his wife’s funeral. He was spotted outside Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on the Upper East Side, talking on the phone, possibly making the necessary funeral arrangements.
Later in the day, Andy and Judith were joined by his good friend, Oberon Sinclair. At the time, Andy was not wearing the mask or backpack. However, he was still wearing his denim jacket and beige pants.
The recent widower looked tensed and worried as he walked in the city. He and his mother seemed to be consoling and supporting each other constantly; they had their arms on each other’s backs. Andy’s niece Rachel Brosnahan and her older brother Earl Brosnahan also visited him at his apartment.
The funeral home has also catered to other celebrities, including actor, Heath Ledger, former First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, singer and songwriter, John Lennon, and fashion designer, L’Wren Scott.
Kate Spade, 55, died in her apartment on Tuesday morning. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner declared her death as suicide by means of hanging. On Wednesday, her husband, Andy spoke publicly for the first time since she died. In a statement, he announced that Kate had been suffering from depression and anxiety for many years.
He said that she had been ‘actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease’. He also revealed that they had been living separately for nearly a year.
Andy also claimed that his wife left a note for his daughter which was not received by her, but was instead posted by news outlets and leaked on the Internet. Andy was upset at this and said, “I am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”
The note was addressed specifically to Kate’s daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, in which Kate insisted she did not want her daughter to think the suicide was her fault.
