A$AP Rocky’s assault trial in Sweden is approaching final verdict. “We pleaded, we begged them. We said ‘We don’t want to fight y’all.’”
The 30-year-old rapper whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested over assault during his flight in Stockholm on June 30th.
According to the Associated Press he has been in custody since July 3 and could possibly face 2 year in Swedish jail if convicted. The rapper has received a lot of support from his fellow artists in the industry.
President Trump also spoke against his arrest.”Treat Americans fairly!” the POTUS tweeted after the incident, adding, “Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM.”
Furthermore, he criticized the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, “We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem! #FreeRocky.”
As the story further blew up, a spokesperson for the Swedish Prime Minister, Mikael Lindstrom commented, “In Sweden everyone is equal before the law. The Government is not allowed, and will not attempt, to influence the legal proceedings, which are now ongoing.”
Followed by Trump revealing in a tweet that he had gotten in touch with Lofven and offered “to personally vouch for his [A$AP Rocky’s] bail”
In addition, Toni Eriksson who is Lofven’s press secretary stated that Trump and Lofven had a “friendly and respectful” conversation regarding the matter and Lofven “made certain to emphasize the complete independence of the Swedish judicial system, prosecutors and courts.”
Mustafa Jafari, the alleged victim, claimed during his testimony that Mayers and his group assaulted him. He stated that he followed Mayers to get back his headphones when he was hit in the head with a bottle.
The prosecution accused A$AP Rocky of throwing a 19-year-old man to the ground to then punch and kick him.
After being detained for the fight, the rapper pleaded not guilty for the assault. He described the incident in the courtroom by stating that he was downloading an app when his personal bodyguard was approached by the person involved in the brawl.
“Things got a little weird. We thought that the behavior of these guys was strange, it got a bit scary,” he explained.
In addition, the rapper claimed that alleged victim may have been under the influence of drugs and proceeded to follow him along with his friends when the rapper attempted to walk away.
“At this point we are really scared. I saw my security guard being cut, bleeding. We didn’t know what to expect with these strangers — I’m not from Sweden, so it was really scary,” Mayers stated.
Furthermore, he said, “I wanted to go straight to the hotel for safety. I didn’t want this to happen. We had no clue where we were, we just knew we weren’t close to the hotel.”
He then clarified during the cross examination in the Swedish courtroom, that the assault was an act of defense. “I was scared and we were in defense mode, You’ve got to realize that my life is very, very particular,” Mayers claimed.
He added, “We’re in a foreign country. We’re approached by two strangers with aggressive behavior.”
The rapper also revealed a horrific past experience that made him react so harshly here. He said, “Ten months ago when I was with my cousin and these two gentlemen, I was stabbed in the face.”
He said, “I don’t know what to expect when I’m being approached by strangers. That is why I have a security guard. I’m only thinking about defending myself.”
A$AP Rocky also made it evident that he wanted “justice”
“I spent a month here in Sweden. This is my fifth or sixth time here. I’ve seen the most beautiful architecture and beautiful side of Sweden. And the obviously the not so pretty side of Sweden from inside prison,” he revealed.
“I’ve heard speculation that I could demand damages and money and what not. I don’t want any money. I can earn that money back. For me, what I want is justice. And I want my name to be cleared. And justice for all.”
The judge will decide if A$AP Rocky and his group are to remain in custody after further witnesses cross-examination on Friday. The verdict will be announced soon.
A$AP Rocky has had to cancel several shows across Europe due to the trial.
