The Captain of the Ottawa Senators, Eric Karlsson, and wife Melinda tragically lose their unborn son, just a month before their due date!
Ottawa Senators said in a statement, “The collective thoughts and prayers of the Ottawa Senators organization, the city of Ottawa and entire hockey community rest with Erik and Melinda Karlsson following the loss of their son. We ask that you respect the family’s wishes for privacy during the grieving process.”
The team also announced that Eric Karlsson’s name has been taken off the team sheet for their match against Florida Panthers on Tuesday, while Eric and his family are in mourning of their son’s death.
The child would have been Eric Karlsson’s first child, with his second wife Melinda Currey; after the couple got married in August.
The 27-year-old Eric Karlsson had announced, in November, that he and his wife, Melinda, are expecting. The announcement was made through a very sweet post on Instagram.
He wrote, “The most exciting news we have ever received arrived earlier this year. Can’t wait to meet you.”
Later on New Year’s, he posted a picture of him and his wife walking in a forest on Instagram saying, “2017 was the last year it was just the 2 of us. Can’t wait for our new chapter in life.”
The latest mention of their child and how happy the couple was for their child was on the 20th of February when he wrote on Instagram, “Just me and my little family.:) #dadhat”.
Many sports personalities, fans, and teams have expressed their condolences for the couple and their loss.
Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators Guy Boucher spoke out to the media after the team’s loss to Florida Panthers by 7-2. He said, “Everybody’s heartbroken… we definitely feel for Erik, his wife, and his family.”
Guy Boucher also said, “It’s been a tough year but this is a real personal devastating blow to them. We feel for them and Erik is going to take the time he needs to come back and once he does we’ll do our best to support him. It’s definitely a sad day.”
The Los Angeles Kings wrote on Twitter, “The entire LA Kings’ organization is thinking of Erik Karlsson and his family during this time.”

Eric Karlsson, in his ninth season of the National Hockey League (NHL), has 8 goals and 48 assists under his belt. He has also won the James Norris Memorial Trophy award for being NHL’s best defenseman twice for the Ottawa Senators.
