Author Suzanne Collins revealed previously that The Hunger Games prequel novel is in the works and will release in 2020.
Good Morning America announced on Friday that the new book will be titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The cover of the book has also been released. It shows a gold Mockingjay and a snake on a branch, while the background displays green and black circles.
The upcoming novel will be set 64 years before the well-established trilogy The Hunger Games, about the characters of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. It will focus on the ‘Dark Days’ when the districts rebelled against the Capitol and failed. It also saw the end of District 13.
Novelist Collins also released a statement to US News about her upcoming book. She said, “With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival.”
Adding further, “The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days — as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet — provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”
Joe Drake, the Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told The Associated Press that they were excited about the prequel. Saying, “As the proud home of the ‘Hunger Games’ movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published.”
“We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process. And we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie,” he added.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be released on May 19, 2020.
