Following in Kim’s footsteps, Khloe Kardashian has announced that she will eat her placenta after giving birth.
Khloe, 33, is expecting her first child with current boyfriend and Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player, Tristan Thompson, 26. The baby is due in late March or early April. The couple has been in a relationship since August 2016 and first appeared together at Flo Rida’s birthday party at LIV in Miami, Florida.
So far, we’ve been let in on two key pieces of information regarding her birth plan. Firstly, Khloe plans to deliver the baby in Cleveland, where the couple resides. Secondly, she plans to eat her baby’s placenta in pill-form, much like her sister Kim Kardashian did back in 2015 when she gave birth to Saint.
The second revelation was made on Sunday’s episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians.
Kim’s odd response to Khloe’s news was that her placenta was unusually large, so her doctor gave it to her in two jars. What’s more is, she requested the pills to be grape flavored!
According to Khloe’s website, she’s recently been digging strawberry-infused water. That could be a hint as to what flavor her placenta pills might be, but we’ll just have to wait to hear!
Human placentophagy, consumption of the placenta, is quite uncommon in contemporary societies but celebs in the U.S. are recently bringing back this rare practice.
In 2015, January Jones of Mad Men fame told People Magazine that she ate her baby’s placenta in the form of capsules. Pioneering this revival of placentophagy, she advocated for the practice and said the pills gave her a lot of energy. She also added, “Humans are the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.” Now who knew that!
Kim strongly promoted the practice of eating your own placenta postpartum, claiming that it helped her feel energized and prevented postpartum depression.
“Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good,” she said.
While there is no scientific proof of the co-relation between these symptoms and placentophagy, such and many other health benefits of the practice are often claimed by some experts. Other benefits of consuming your baby’s placenta may include increase in the quantity of breast milk, normalizing hormones and lower chances of insomnia.
These claims are yet to be tested but they are definitely worth studying. What we do know is, Kim vouches for the practice and reportedly hired doula Joni Lucarelli to convert her placenta into pills, a process which costs on average $275.
According to Page Six, Lucarelli has done this process for around 500 placentas over the past six years. We are yet to know who Khloe will be hiring for the process.
Although the results sound promising, some doctors warn against placentophagy, highlighting that it may actually spread infections to the baby due to harmful bacteria that may be present in the placenta.
One thing’s for sure, we all hope it works out positively for Khloe, as it did for her sister Kim, and that she doesn’t face any complications from consuming her baby’s placenta.
Other celebs who have eaten their own placentas include Kourtney Kardashian, Nikki Reed, Blac Chyna and Alicia Silverstone.
