Gigi used to come under fire for being “too big” for the catwalk when she started modeling. At the time, she was 17 and suffering from the thyroid condition. Recently, body shamers have taken another angle: they have been calling her too skinny.

Hashimoto’s disease affects about 14 million people in the US. However, experts are unclear about the exact cause of the condition. Essentially, the disease causes the immune system to react abnormally. The body begins to produce antibodies that damage the butterfly shaped thyroid gland; this produces hormones that are responsible for the regulation of the body’s metabolic rate.

These hormones also regulate muscle control, heart and digestive functions. When this system suffers a breakdown, the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, causing sporadic weight gain, puffy face and muscle weakness.

Gigi was first signed as a model five years ago. It was during her stint at IMG that she discovered her underlying condition.

“When I started [at] 17, I was not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease,” she tweeted.

“Those of [you] who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation and water retention due to that.”
