“Not many people have asked if I’m OK.”
The clip is from ITV‘s documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey. Reporter Tom Bradby is interviewed the Duke and Duchess for the piece. In the documentary, the Duchess of Sussex talks the pressures of newly married life and the media fixation on her.
She said in the interview, “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed.”
After the interviewer asked her how she was feeling about the media attention, the Duchess got emotional. She replied, “Thank you for asking. Not many people have asked if I’m OK, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
The reporter asked if that meant that the Duchess was not OK. She simply replied “Yes.” Following the release of the clip, #WeLoveYouMeghan started trending on Twitter.
One person wrote, “I know it’s been hard on Meghan but seeing her trying not to say much made me cry for her, getting married, being pregnant in a foreign country is [tough] and it doesn’t help been shred to pieces. I am so happy she has Harry and her Mom, close friends to rely on.”
Other people had much less sympathy. One person wrote, “So S Africa trip was a self promoting documentary asking public feel sorry for them !!! Cannot believe how shallow these two are disgraceful.”
Another person wrote, “Those were the choices that she made. Why is everyone sympathising her for her own choices???”
The Duke of Sussex said in a statement, “Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences — a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.”
The documentary, which is about the couple’s tour of Southern Africa will be released in UK on Sunday, October 20.
