Kirk Douglas, an icon of Hollywood’s golden age has passed away at the age of 103.
His son Michael Douglas shared the unfortunate news with the world. He said in a statement on Instagram, “It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103. To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”
“But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband,” he continued.
Michael Douglas also added, “Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.”
The Spartacus actor had more than 92 acting credits and in 1960 he was inducted in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kirk Douglas is survived by his wife Anne Buydens whom he married in 1954. He also had 4 children, Michael, Joel, Peter, and Eric.
Many stars paid tribute to the Hollywood legend. Rambo star Sylvester Stallone wrote, “KIRK DOUGLAS!!! The last great giant of my cinema heroes has passed on to Infinite glory. Amazing artist… the likes of which we will never ever see again!”
Douglas’s daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones said, “To my darling Kirk, I shall love you for the rest of my life. I miss you already. Sleep tight…”
William Shatner of Star Trek wrote: “Condolences to the family of Kirk Douglas. What an incredible icon he was in this industry!”
Director Danny DeVito wrote, “Kirk Douglas. The inspirational Scalawag. 103 years on this earth. That’s got a nice ring to it! Great hanging with you man.”
Icon Mark Hamill also said, “Kirk Douglas was one of the biggest stars of all time & a brilliant actor with an unforgettable, blazing charisma. He will also be remembered for putting his career on the line by defying the Hollywood Blacklist, hiring writer Dalton Trumbo for the classic Spartacus. #RIP.”
Star Trek’s George Takei added, “Legendary actor Kirk Douglas has passed on today at the age of 103. An Academy Award winning actor and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Douglas was a champion for many just causes and lived a long and storied life. ‘He was adored and beloved, and he shall be missed.”
