Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Face Backlash Over Christmas Decision
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen to spend Christmas in America with her family instead of with the Queen in England.

Last Christmas, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent Christmas at Frogmore Castle with Queen Elizabeth II. A spokesperson revealed last week that the couple will be spending the holidays in America with the Duchess of Sussex’s mother.

The spokesperson said, “Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”

This is the first holiday season with the Duke and Duchess’ son Prince Archie. A source told Vanity Fair, “It has always been important to Meghan that Archie grows up aware of his American heritage and they plan to spend more time in the States as he grows up. They’ve not had much time off and this feels like the right moment to take a proper break.”

A source also told People that the break is necessary for Markle, who recently admitted in an ITV interview that the role she has taken on is much more difficult than she expected. The source said,”Just on a human level, if you take everything else out of the equation. I don’t think they’re in very good shape to deal with anything right now.”

A source told US Weekly,”As it’s Archie’s first Christmas, they want it to be super special. It’ll be just Doria and the three of them. The drama surrounding the couple has caused a huge amount of stress. They’re making their family their No. 1 priority right now.”

The Queen’s biographer Sally Bedell Smith revealed that the decision not to spend the holidays with the Queen can cause public speculation. Smith told Vanity Fair, “Given that Harry and Meghan didn’t go to Balmoral over the summer, it could be seen as another piece of evidence that they are going their own way.”

“Christmas at Sandringham is a deeply embedded tradition in the royal family but the Queen does sometime make allowances,” Bedell said. Prince William and Kate Middleton have also historically alternated holidays between the Queen and Kate Middleton’s parents home in Sandringham in Buckleberry.

Markle spent Christmas with the Queen in Sandringham in 2017, before she married Prince Harry. The Prince said during a BBC interview, “I think we’ve got one of the biggest families that I know of and every family is complex as well. She’s done an absolutely amazing job, she’s getting there.”

A source said the separate holidays might be good for the rift between Prince William and Prince Harry. The source said,”Everyone is hoping that they will come back from this break stronger than ever and maybe with some time out of the spotlight, they can figure out what path to take next.”
