The Crown made the official announcement on Twitter, welcoming Gillian Anderson to the cast.
They wrote, “Gillian Anderson will play Margaret Thatcher in The Crown Season Four, now in production.”
The X-Files actress said, “I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman.”
Adding further, “Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether we loved or despised, defined an era.”
The 51-year-old actress recently also starred in Netflix’s Sex Education.
In the first two seasons, Claire Foy starred as Queen Elizabeth and Matt Smith played the role of Prince Phillip. Now, Olivia Colman will also be starring as the current British monarch in the new season of The Crown. While Outlander’s Tobias Menzies will star as Prince Phillip.
Helena Bonham Carter will take on the role of Princess Margaret, previously played by Vanessa Kirby. Josh O’Connor from The Durrells’ who will play the role of a young Prince Charles. Meanwhile, Emma Corrin has been cast as Princess Diana.
Furthermore, Season 3 of the Netflix show will cover the years 1964-1977. This will include the rule under Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and the affair of Princess Margaret, as well as the moon landing.
Season 3 of The Crown will premiere on 17 September on Netflix.
