Ron Leibman, Tony-award winning actor, lost his battle with pneumonia on Friday in New York.
His reps told Entertainment Online the tragic news in a statement. The CEO of Abrams Artists Agency, Robert Attermann stated, “We at Abrams Artists Agency are saddened to hear the news of Ron’s passing. Ron was an incredibly talented actor with a distinguished career in film, TV and theatre. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Jessica, and his family.”
The actor was known for playing Rachel Green’s (Jennifer Aniston) father, Leonard Green, in the hit sitcom Friends. Ron Leibman also won an Emmy award for his series ‘Kaz’ in 1979. Furthermore, he also won a Tony award for Tony Kushner’s play ‘Angels in America: Millennium Approaches’.
In 1983, Leibman married fellow actress Jessica Walter known for her role as Lucille Bluth in ‘Arrested Development’.
The veteran actor’s fellow co-star Sally Field expressed her sorrow over the loss of Leibman. She wrote on Twitter, “So many of the best memories of my career, have Ron Leibman in them. Thank you, Ron. For my being my champion. Rest, my friend.”
Acclaimed director Edgar Wright also tweeted, “I’m a little obsessed with Ron Leibman’s performance in The Super Cops. It’s one of those live wire performances that totally transforms a movie. He’s also just great in The Hot Rock and Where’s Poppa? Very sad to hear he just passed away, a brilliant dramatic and comedic actor.”
The Tony Awards also wrote, “So sad to hear that Ron Leibman has passed away. The stage, film, and TV star won a Tony Award as Best Actor in a Play for creating the role of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America.” Rest in peace.”
