Demi Moore said that after the rape, the man asked her how it felt to be “wh*red” by her mom.
She came home one night to find an older man in her apartment. She and her mother both knew the man. He raped her, and then asked her how it felt “to be wh*red by your mother for $500.”
Sawyer asked Moore whether she felt her mother sold her. Moore said, “I think, in my deep heart no — I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction. But she still — she did give him the access and put me in harm’s way.”
Moore’s mother first attempted suicide when she was only 12 years old. She said, “I remember using my fingers, the small fingers of a child, to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow, out of her mouth.”
The actress said both her parents were alcoholics, and faced a lot of debt. The latter situation had the family moving across the country. Moore said that during the course of her life, her mother attempted suicide “many, many times.” The actress said she found out later that the dad she lived with was not her biological father.
She said that she felt like “I wasn’t wanted, or that I don’t deserve to be here.”
Moore dropped out of high school and started going to acting auditions. She said,“I mean, I was figuring it out, by the seat of my pants. The school of ‘fake it till you make it… I don’t have anything to lose. I don’t have anything, so why not?”
At 19, she was cast in General Hospital. It was around this time that she started using alcohol and cocaine to cope with her fears. She explained, “I don’t have an off switch. I don’t have the thing that says, ‘This is enough.’”
After being cast as the party girl in St Elmo’s Fire in 1984, Moore went to rehab. She said of sobriety, “[It was] a profound gift that they gave me.”
Moore eventually became Hollywood’s highest paid actress. She said she was called “Gimme Moore” as a joke, adding,“Why shouldn’t I? Why shouldn’t all women be paid equal to the quality of the work they’re doing? Just treat me the same. No better, no worse.”
