Brad Pitt was honored at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala on Wednesday night by his friend Bradley Cooper.
Bradley Cooper presented his friend Brad Pitt with the award for Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. The event was held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.
The 56-year-old Ad Astra star hugged Cooper after getting on stage. Pitt revealed that the 45-year-old A Star is Born actor had just put his 2-year-old daughter, Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper, to bed before coming to the awards show.
In his speech, Brad Pitt said, “Thank you, Bradley. Bradley just put his daughter to bed and rushed over here to do this. He’s a sweetheart. I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier ever since. I love you and I thank you.”
This marks the first time Pitt has opened up about his alcoholism publicly. Previously, in an interview with the New York Times, he revealed that he had spent more than a year and a half in Alcoholics Anonymous after his separation from wife Angelina Jolie back in 2016. He also confessed that he has remained sober ever since.
Also revealing, “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges.”
Furthermore, he sat down with Interview magazine to talk to fellow actor Anthony Hopkins. 81-year-old Hopkins asked Pitt, “I’ve read you had a struggle with booze and all that.” Pitt said it was an “escape” for him that was to some degree “necessary”.
Pitt also said that today’s society is one where everyone is “judgemental and quick to treat people as disposable.”
He added, “We’ve always placed great importance on the mistake. But the next move, what you do after the mistake, is what really defines a person. We’re all going to make mistakes. But what is the next step? We don’t, as a culture, seem to stick around to see what that person’s next step is. And that’s the part I find so much more invigorating and interesting.”
Brad Pitt also recently won a Golden Globe for OUATH.
