Billie Eilish reveals that she has stopped reading Instagram comments because of the trolls and nasty comments.
The 18-year-old singer gave an interview along with her brother Finneas O’Connell to BBC. Host Louise Minchin asked Eilish whether she still reads all the comments on Instagram.
To which the Bad Guy singer replied, “I stopped reading comments full because it was ruining my life. Once again. It’s weird, the cooler things you get to do, the more people hate you. It’s crazy.”
The host asked, “What do we do about that, how do we make it better?”
Eilish responded, “I don’t know dude. Cancel culture is crazy. The internet is just a bunch of trolls. A problem is that a lot of it is really funny. I think that’s the issue, I think that’s why nobody really stops.”
“Also, I would say that it’s anything for a joke,” she continued. “You’d say anything to make people laugh. I’ve experienced that. Growing up, I’d say things that people would laugh at and then later I’d realise that wasn’t cool to say. It’s worse, it’s way worse than it’s ever been. It’s insane that I’ve even been reading comments up until this point.”
“I should have stopped long ago. The problem is that I’ve wanted to stay in touch with the fans and keep talking to them, but people have ruined that for me. The internet is ruining my life so I stay off.”
Her brother also added, “I think you might see someone like a famous celebrity and you may think, ‘Sticks and stones, nothing I say is going to be potent to them… but it’s all very equal online.
Minchin further suggested, “It doesn’t matter how big a star you are or how many Grammys you have, it can still hurt.”
“It’s worse, it’s way worse than it’s ever been right now,” Billie Eilish also said.
Eilish is the youngest singer in history to sing the James Bond theme song.
